I am in a major love affair. My heart has been stolen by this city and I don’t think it’ll let go.
I have met the most amazing people. Friendly, ambitious, intelligent, and beautiful. I don’t know how people say New York isn’t friendly — I’ve come across helpful strangers and genuinely caring people every where. People want to know you and your story; they’re social.
I’m on a constant adventure. There is always something new to discover. I’m never in a state of boredom. There is an incomparable buzz and motivating energy — I can’t stay still because there is always someone working (or walking!) harder and faster. There’s an edge here — you have to stay on top of your game because if you don’t someone else is and you’ll be left behind. People want to be amazing, want to excel. It’s everywhere. It’s motivating, inspiring.
NYC is my BF and this relationship is the one love stories are made of.

We were on a mission: To discover our favourite cupcakes in Manhattan. Miriam and I set out Sunday morning afternoon with an ambitious list of ten bakeries to visit. Unfortunately, a evening filled with pickle backs (a shot of whiskey chased with pickle juice, weird but not as bad as you’d think) and generous bartenders did not leave us in the ideal cupcakery state. Although we had diligently mapped out our day, three bakeries in we realized that this expedition was going to have a few parts.

First up was Baked by Melissa. Even smaller than a regular mini cupcake, these guys were so cute. Moist and in fun flavours, I tested out cookies and creme, peanut butter cup, and red velvet. The peanut butter cup was my favourite of the three, and Miriam and I agreed that the red velvet was underwhelming and didn’t taste like what you would expect.

Next, we found ourselves in Harlem. That’s not normally something you want to catch yourself saying but it was a sunny Sunday and nothing bad happens on sunny Sundays right? Tonnie’s Minis have amazing reviews on Yelp and I was curious about this cupcake shop in the middle of Harlem; we trekked all the way to 125th and Malcolm X Blvd. I had the most amazing carrot cake cupcake with cream cheese frosting sprinkled with crushed walnuts. Great frosting to cake ratio, and just the lightest, creamiest, most delicious cream cheese frosting I’ve tasted. If I wasn’t such a wimp, I’d probably go back for these babies.

Sprinkles was next on the list but after just these two stops we were already feeling sugared out. Since we had both had Sprinkles before we decided to place it on the B-list and head over to the Upper East Side and try Two Little Red Hens. I settled on a coconut cream mini cake and it was good. The cake was spongier and the frosting was light; good, but my least favourite of the day.
At this point, we needed real food and ended up on the sunny patio of some restaurant in Union Square — you can bet we declined dessert when our server offered. Stay tuned for part two (and maybe three?) of The Great NYC Cupcake Hunt!
I’ve been in New York for just over two weeks and I can’t get enough. I am SO in love with this city.
I’m staying in East Village and have met a bunch of girls from my building who are around my age and work in similar industries. We are so close to so many restaurants and bars — it’s just too easy to have fun! Happy hour, Pinkberry, and shopping are all a quick walk away.
The internship I’m at is fantastic. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first walked in last Monday morning and to my relief I entered a beautiful showroom in Chelsea. We’re in the same building as Ports, Tommy Hilfiger, Club Monaco, Martha Stewart Weddings and more — it’s a fashion hub. The agency has a huge list of high-profile clients which has been so fun to work with; I’m definitely getting the intensive fashion PR experience I was hoping for.
I’ve had so many moments where I honestly can’t believe I’m here. I feel out of my comfort zone and it’s exhilarating. I don’t want to waste a second. Oh, and that’s another thing, I got a job offer from the agency I was interning at before, Yulu Communications! So, that means my time here is limited as I start full-time at Yulu in June. So excited; it worked out perfectly because I really wanted to work with them when I got home. My first grown-up job in PR right after I graduated. It’s all I could have hoped for!
But for now, there is so much to do and so much to see. I love New York City.
